Dutch windmill Straupitz/ Spreewald – A European cultural heritage
The Dutch windmill is a technical monument today and at the same time the last producing "triple" windmill in Europe. It is a corn-, oil- and sawmill. The Old Dutch windmill is a landmark of Straupitz.
The corn mill in the mill tower
It is one of a few windmills that is still completely furnished. It is still like it was when it was closed in 1964. The technology corresponds to that from the 1930's and is again working efficiently. The corn mill is in use when there is enough wind present.
The oil mill
It is he last mill of its kind in Germany. Here linseed oil is pressed like it has been done in the past 100 years. A fine aroma of roasted linseed fills the mill. The linseed oil, which is produced in this traditional way, tastes slightly nutty, hardly bitter. The oil miller will give you a free sample on request.
The sawmill
The sawmill is also in its original state and is completely functional. Because it is uneconomical, it is only occasionally in use. The very rare "horizontal gate" for tree trunks up to one meter thick originates from 1900 and the "full gate" is from 1885.
